Spinning Reels

Spinning reels are probably the most popular type of reel available. They are generally easy to use whilst remaining backlash free so they are a good start for angling newcomers. They are also available in a variety of price ranges so even the smallest of budgets can pick one up. The price will vary and in most cases will carry a linear increase depending on the number of bearings used in the reel. (Typically, a higher number of bearings will mean a smoother reel) however you can still get cheap spinning reels that are smooth.

Spinning reels have a fixed spool which all but eradicates backlash (which is a common problem for new anglers and baitcasting reels). They can however be more bulky. They come in 3 basic categories, and you should consider which is most applicable to you. However, bear in mind that some reels can fit into more than one category. It is also worth pointing out that the varience on the reels is also the reason that many anglers have a second fishing reel.

Ultralight spinning reels are usually designed to handle 6 pounds and below.

Light tackle fisherman will often opt for the light spinning reels which provide a quality fish fight experience. Nowadays a lot of anglers are 'catch and release' which is why this type is so popular.

Heavy spinning reels are the beasts of the reels and will hold line up to about 50 pounds. They are typically used for heavy spinning tackle which would suit trolling and surf fishing while some have even used them for bottom fishing.
